The purpose of the Athena Women in Film Festival was to shed light on the work of female film directors who’s films are often overlooked or not as widely promoted as the work of their male counterparts. As such, I decided the tagline of the event should be ‘Illuminating the Power of the Female Gaze’ to emphisize the festival’s mission to turn the spotlight on the work of these directors and create space for their vision.

For the festival poster design, the visage of the Goddess Athena is featured prominantly and she appears to be illuminated from within as she gazes at the viewer as if through the lens of a film camara. The word ‘Athena’ slopes across her face in the shape of a film strip while the surrounding typography reflects an urban, graffiti style symbolizing the festivals gritty, grassroots takeover of the film world for these three days.
